Ask Brien

I've voted in every primary for as long as I can remember. I've never once paid attention to the Clerk's race. Why should this year be any different?

Because this year you actually have a choice — and that hasn't been true in a long time. The last two people to hold this office were appointed, not elected. The one before that ran unopposed three times. In 28 years there have been only three contested races for this seat including this one. Most years, leaving that line blank or checking the only name on it amounts to the same thing. This year it doesn't. There are two names, two different visions, a big gap in qualifications and a real decision to make. That alone makes it worth two extra seconds at the bottom of your ballot.
